Goldilocks Bakery's Golden Year

Submitted by Christine Layug

For many Filipinos, Goldilocks Bakery (or simply known as Goldilocks) is considered as one of the first bakeshops in the Philippines that grew successfully in its field. Several years ago, even before the great martial law that took over the Philippines in 1972, Goldilocks have already been providing their unique cakes to Filipinos across the country. It was in 1966 that three Filipino women decided on starting a business of their own, with their own skills, and with their own passion.

The Start Of Goldilock's Golden Years
The first branch of Goldilocks Bakery was founded by two sister Milagros and Clarita, and their sister-in-law, Doris. It was in 1966 that these three women decided in opening a small bakeshop along to the Pasong Tamo Street, Makati. With their combined prowess, Milagros, as being a supplier of chiffon slices to a number of Manila's canteens, and Clarita, with her baking and decorating skills with cakes during special occasions in Bicol, they have decided to take this hobbies together to found their own bakeshop.

A third sister, Maria Flor, suggested that they name the enterprise "Goldilocks", after the character in a fairy tale, aiming to make it easier for children and their mothers to remember its name; and because it suggested luck and prosperity.

From a simple hobby, Goldilocks Bakery turned to into a huge success. This led its founder to expand their scope not only in the Philippines, but in other countries. It first opened its US branch in 1976, at Artesia, CA where Filipino expatriates commonly migrate. From that time, Goldilocks Bakery even grew farther.

From ten employees and two display stands, Goldilocks has become a global brand, expanding to over a total of 250 stores in the Philippines and overseas; and hiring thousands of local employees. The opening day total sales of P574 back in 1966 has multiplied thousand of times over, reaching a system-wide sales of P5.9 billion by the end of 2007.

Other Expansions
Other than cakes and pastries, Goldilocks have also expanded to include other popular Filipino dishes. The Bakeshop's main product lines includes cakes and breads, sweets and pastries. Some branches incorporate a Foodshop, offering Filipino cuisine, including beef, chicken, pork, seafood and vegetable dishes as well as their Thirst Quenchers, such as Halo-halo, Gulaman, Fruit salad and Sago.
