Jollibee's Full Food Service Capability

Submitted by Christine Layug

Jollibee is considered as one of the biggest known fast-food chains not only within the confines of the Philippines, but also across the world, particularly in the United States, Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Dubai and Brunei. But little does anybody know that Jollibee's success and growth in the food service industry didn't only come from its one name, but also because of massive expansions and acquisition of other popular fast food chains in the industry that also contributed to its growth. These include Chowking, Greenwich Pizza, Red Ribbon Bakeshop, Délifrance, and Manong Pepe's.

Chowking
Chowking is a Philippine-based fast-food chain that pioneered the Asian quick-service restaurant concept in the Philippines. The concept combines the best in Western fast-food style of service with Chinese food. Chowking predominantly sells noodle soups, dimsum, and rice toppings. The company was founded in 1985 at a time when Western-style burger joints were dominating the Philippine fast food scene. In 1989, Chowking started expanding its market share amid the volatility in the domestic market. It started its franchising operations and made its entry into the provincial markets the same year.

According to the Jollibee Philippine website, it was on January 1, 2000 that Chowking became a wholly owned subsidiary of Jollibee Foods Corporation, the Philippines' biggest fast-food chain. The change in ownership gave rise to store renovations and a new corporate look and mindset that is visible from front-end to back-end.

Greenwich Pizza
Greenwich started as an over-the-counter pizza store in the Greenhills Commercial Center in Metro Manila in 1971. According to the Jollibee Philippine website, it was in 1994 that Jollibee Foods Corporation obtained a deal acquiring 80% of Greenwich shareholding. But it was until 2006 in which Jollibee Foods Corp. bought out the remaining shares of its partners in Greenwich Pizza Corp. The new company was called Greenwich Pizza Corporation, and the franchise experienced rapid expansion. From 50 stores in 1994, as of 2005 there are over 240 stores and an annual revenue of over P4 billion. Greenwich Pizza is now considered as the largest pizza and pasta chain in the Philippines.

Red Ribbon Bakeshop
Red Ribbon Bakeshop is a popular fast-food chain and bakery in the Philippines and the United States, offering a wide range of cakes and pastries. According to the Jollibee Philippine website, Jollibee Food Corp. acquired Red Ribbon Bakeshop.

Délifrance
Délifrance is a bakery company that serves "French style" bakery products in over 50 countries on five continents. It has been in operation across the world for more than 25 years. In 2006, according to the Jollibee Philippine website, that the company acquired the franchise of Délifrance. This further expanded its penetration in the food service industry, particularly in the French cafe-bakery, a growing segment of the Philippine food market.

Manong Pepe's
On July 25, 2007, Jollibee launched its pilot restaurant "Tio Pepe's Karinderia" in Edsa Central in Mandaluyong, to professionalize the Philippine carinderia business.
