Jollibee's Success Through Their Expansions

Submitted by Christine Layug

Jollibee is considered as one of the largest fast-food restaurants in the world, competing with other popular fast-food restaurants such as Burger King, Wendy's, and most particularly McDonald's. McDonald's is known as the largest chain of hamburger fast food restaurants, serving nearly 47 million customers daily. It has branches all over the world, including in the Philippines. But unlike any other countries, Philippines still consider their own Jollibee as their top fast-food chain. In fact, McDonald's have had difficulties in attaining the larger market in the Philippines due to Filipino's love for Jollibee.

Today, according to their Jollibee website, Jollibee has been known as one of the largest fast-food chain in the world having 1287 stores in the Philippines and 161 in other countries including Brunei, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, UAE, Vietnam, and the US. But aside from their signature brand, JFC (Jollibee Foods Corporation) is also known to own several other fast-food chains. These expansions has been brought by the company's endless passion to provide better service for their customers, either in the Philippines or from the abroad.

Expansions Through Acquisition
Part of the company's expansions is acquiring other popular fast-food chains. This was first applied in the Philippines in which JFC acquired some of the best known fast-food chains in the Philippines today. These include Greenwich Pizza, Chowing, Red Ribbon Bakeshop, and Délifrance.

According to their Jollibee website, the company acquired 80% of Greenwich Pizza in 1994, enabling it to penetrate the pizza-pasta segment. From a 50-branch operation, Greenwich has established a strong presence in the food service industry. In early 2006, Jollibee Foods Corp. bought out the remaining shares of its partners in Greenwich Pizza Corp., equivalent to a 20% stake, for P384 million in cash.

In 2000, the company acquired Chowking, allowing Jollibee to be part of the Asian quick service restaurant segment. In 2005, they acquired Red Ribbon Bakeshop, another popular restaurant chain in the Philippines. In 2006, the company acquired the franchise of Délifrance. This further expanded its penetration in the food service industry, particularly in the French cafe-bakery, a growing segment of the Philippine food market.

Other Acquisition
Along with its Philippine brands, the company also runs a Chinese fast food chain, Yonghe King, in mainland China, and a popular teahouse chain from Taiwan called Chun Shui Tang (Spring Water Hall). Chun Shui Tang teahouse opened a branch on Shanghai's Huaihai Road on June 30, 2006. According to their Jollibee website, in 2007, Jollibee acquired the Chinese fast-food chain Hong Zhuang Yuan.
