Memorable Gifts

Whenever the festive season comes around – or any other special occasions come to that – many people suffer from ‘giftitis’. That is, they just don’t know what to give as an appropriate gift and end up worrying themselves half to death over what should be a great and rewarding event.
Of course there are many shops and websites offering all kinds of gifts and ideas but this variety of choices can sometimes become a little perplexing. Too much choice can sometimes be as bad, if not worse, than not enough choice.
Some people will give purely practical gifts like kitchen equipment or electronic gadgetry while others will go completely off the scale and give gifts that will never again see the light of day once unwrapped. Yet others seem to have the knack of giving just the right thing at the right time; but these people are very few so don’t aspire to be perfect every time!
However, perfection aside, it is possible – with a little thought and consideration – to give a gift that will stir the imagination, titillate the senses or merely surprise the recipient with your attention to detail.
First, consider the recipient. Age plays a great part in the choice of gift. Of course, some gifts must be age appropriate but there is a whole raft of gifts which can be given to old and young alike with the same alacrity.
Secondly, consider the lifestyle of the recipient. Are they globe-trotting individuals who are rarely at home? Or are they stay-at-home types who relish an evening spent in front of the TV or computer? Are they family orientated or strongly individual types who don’t need the support of other family members etc?
Thirdly, consider the occasion. Christmas (or the end of year celebration) is normally the time when we want to show someone that they are in our minds and hearts and that we are thinking of them. Other special occasions, like birthdays, anniversaries etc. are much harder to consider since others are not celebrating at the same time.
Valentine’s Day is another occasion that many people will want to show that ‘someone special’ that they are in their thoughts especially since it is supposed to be a day for ‘lovers’ or prospective new loves.

Flowers are usually welcome but be careful if your recipient is of Asian origin. Fresh flowers are frowned upon since the buds are considered to be ‘babies’ cut off in their prime. Much better then – if living plants are your idea – to give a bonsai tree that will grow for many years. These great little replicas of their full size cousins used to be thought of as difficult to keep. These days, however, many will give them a try and it is a great way to bring nature into the home. Indeed, some specimens are virtually priceless but there are more moderately priced pieces for sale that won’t break the bank.
Fresh flowers are available in all species and colors but, again, take care because colors and types of flowers are said to have different meanings. You wouldn’t want to tell granny that you have a secret, passionate and undying love for her would you? Many ladies, and increasingly men, get a thrill from having a beautiful bouquet delivered to the office or home for all to see; a sort of public display of admiration for the world to see that they are appreciated and loved.
For something more lasting musical boxes, or even musical jewelry boxes, are firm favorites of many age groups. Not only are they practical but they act as a reminder of the past, especially if a favorite tune is incorporated into the piece. Some sites offer ‘design your own’ boxes to some degree with the choice of finish, tune etc. left to you to decide.
