Blu-Ray Disc Player

Submitted by readandbuy

A Blu-Ray Disc player is an audio & video playing or recording device that supports a Blu-Ray disc format. A Blu-Ray disc is an optical disc storage medium that has been designed to supersede DVDs. The disc is of standard 12 cm in diameter as DVDs and CDs. The single layer optical disc supports 25GB data and the dual layer optical disc supports 50GB of data.

How Blu-Ray was coined?

The Blu-Ray disc was developed by the Blu-Ray Disc Association, a group comprising of manufacturers of consumer electronics, computer hardware and motion pictures. The technology behind Blu-Ray disc was the use of ‘blue laser' to read the disc which allows six times more storage than on DVD. However, the term ‘blue' could not be registered as a trademark as it is commonly used in English, and that's how they came up with ‘Blu-Ray' misspelt for ‘Blue'.

Types of Blu-Ray Discs

• Mini Blu-Ray Disc: Also referred to as Mini BD is a compact disc of 8cm diameter that can store up to 7.5GB of data, similar to a Mini DVD and Mini CD. For Compact camcorders and recording devices, recordable (BD-R) and rewritable (BD-RE) versions of Blu-Ray disc are available.

• Blu-Ray Disc Recordable: They include two formats; the recordable (BD-R) for one time only and the re-writable (BD-RE).

• BD9 and BD5: These formats were proposed by the Warner home Video to the Blu-Ray Association as a cost effective alternative to 25/50 GB BD ROM discs. However, it is not guaranteed that these formats can be played on standard Blu-Ray disc players.

• BDXL: The format supports 100/128 GB write-once discs and 100 GB rewritable discs targeted for commercial applications.

• IH-BD: Expands to Intra Hybrid Blu-Ray, a format that includes a 25 GB write-once layer and a 25GB read-only layer.

Popular Blu-Ray Disc Player Brands: Sony , Samsung , Panasonic , Toshiba, LG, OPPO, Philips, JVC, Sharp, and many more.
