LED Flashlight Fundamentals

Submitted by ddeavila

As you may have already noticed, LED technology is growing and becoming more and more popular as time goes by. One LED product that is really hot right now, are led flashlights. More and more people are trading in their old fashioned, incandescent bulb flashlights, for the more rugged and efficient LED torches. But what exactly makes these led flashlights popular. Before you find out you must understand how these LED flashlights work.

LED is short for Light Emitting Diode. This type of lighting technology uses semiconductor technology to produce very bright lights that ordinary light bulbs cannot produce. LED lights come in a variety of colors and wavelengths, including the ultraviolet and infrared spectrum.

The lighting fixture for LED torches and flashlights basically consists of semiconductor materials. It functions like all other diodes. The diode allows current to flow in one direction only. As the charge carrier pass through electron junctions, and those electrons pass through a hole, the difference in energy level changes dramatically, this allows for a photon to be released. A photon is a type of energy.

One very important factor for LED technology is the band gap. The wavelength of the light emitted depends on this. LEDs produced today, are much brighter than they were decades ago, due to the implementation of new materials that have ideal refractive indices.

Besides being brighter than normal incandescent bulbs, LED lights are more rugged and efficient. They can last more than 100,000 hours, even when subjected to high currents and heat. LED torches and flashlights are ideal for emergency situations. Every home should have at least one LED flashlight, because these flashlights will never let you down.
