Shopping for mattresses isn't as simply as everyone thinks, to get it right you really need to do your homework to make sure you are buying a mattress that suits you. If you think how long you will spend in your bed it is worth taking the time to research and shop around to find a mattress that you think is best for you.

So setting aside enough time to do this task properly would be the first rule. The last thing you want to be doing is being pressured into a decision. When go to try out the beds wear comfortable clothes and removing shoes and jacket so you can lie on the bed to try it out. Lie in your normal sleeping position to see how you feel and stay there for at least ten minutes, the longer the better, relax and don't worry about others around you. Try lying in alternative positions such as on your side and on your back to see how you feel in these positions.

The next step is to see if the bed offers you the right support. One way to test this is to lie on your back and slide the flat of your hand into the hollow area of your back. If you find this difficult and you feel you are sinking into the mattress then the bed will likely be too soft for you. A comfortable bed will be dependant on your height, weight and build. Generally the heavier you are the firmer the bed will need to be. Of course your definition of comfort will vary from everyone else's so you may like a firmer bed while others like to sink into their mattress.

Your ideal mattress should mould to the shape of your body while remaining supportive and when you are turning it should be easy for you to do so. If you have a partner who is of significant different weight to you then you could look for one of the manufacturers that offer a bed that provides mattresses zipped together which can be of different tensions therefore each partner can choose their own tension.
