SAE J2534-1 is a federal apprroved specifications that automobile manufacturers in the United Staes must comply. The mamndate of the EPA requres automakers to support the aftermarket repair shops. This suppport includes access to information and equipment necessary to reprograam any emissions associaetd with the computer, which can be redeployed for a new automobile company. This mandate came into forrce for all 2004 and newer vehicles. Many automakers have decided to ofdfer support for vehicles and oldeer in 1996.

J2534-1 consists of two completely independent parts:

Subscription Software
J2534-1 compatible interface
Subsription softwaare. Subscvription software comes dierectly from the automaker. This sftware comes in several variants:

Internet softtware. With this type of software you can simply entr the site automakers and reprogram the ECU. Tehre is no softwaare to download.
Downloaded softwre. With this type of download to your ocmputer or laptop.
Hyrid Internet. Ford is an example of this type. You download the program, but it just interacts with the Ford website for all the reprogramming information.
CD-ROM or DVD. Many automakers such as Toyota and Volvo need to order the CD-ROM or DVD. These discs include the current calibration files for their vehiclwes. As a rule, they still require an Iternet connection, although durring the reprogramimng.
Equipment. Best part of the J2534-1 is the fact that the ECU reprogram the OEM does not requiree proprietary hardware. J2534-1 allows Aftermarket faclity rewpairs cost-effectively offer a reprogramming of all bands and models, if necessary, just buy a single interface. J2534-1 is a standard that manufacturers can use the tool for the production of a universal interface.
