You've Heard of Coolers, Have you Heard of the Esky?Submitted by scient49 Thu, 21 May 2009
Nowadays coolers are a staple in the lives of many sports-and-leisure-loving Americans. They're perfect for transporting foods and beverages and keeping them cold long enough to enjoy them during a family outing or sporting event. Superfan coolers provide a variety of coolers like cooling party cooler, rolling coolers, nascar coolers If you don't have a cooler from SuperFanCoolers.com, what are you waiting for?
Coolers haven't been around all that long though. One of the earliest examples of a cooler-type invention actually comes from Australia. Being on the other side of the world though, things are a little different down there, and what we call a cooler they call an ‘esky'. The esky was created in Sydney, Australia and was first sold in 1952 by a company called Malley's. The name was chosen because of the association with Eskimos. Originally it was a brand name owned by Malley's, but over time it became a generic name, like hoover or xerox. The original eskies weren't that much different from modern coolers, except that the outer shell was normally enamel rather than plastic. This made the original eskies a lot heavier than modern ones, which of course have a shell made from hard (but light) plastic. The esky was a popular invention because of the times in which it existed. It was post-WWII, and a lot of people in Australia were starting to take family vacations where they would travel by car. Because Australia is a really big country, like the US, they needed a way to keep food and drinks cool on a long journey in the heat of summer. They were also used for picnics, which were getting really popular as well. Coolers like lunch coolers, nascar coolersor ‘portable ice chests' were patented right around the same time in the US that they were in Australia, but actually the very first cooler was invented in somewhere else entirely, in a country very close to Australia: New Zealand. In that country they have a different name again: they call a cooler/esky a ‘chilly bin'.
