Setting Your Color SchemeSubmitted by neillisa Thu, 13 Aug 2009
Home design may have evolved through the years, but one thing that hasn't change is its strong association with color. Think about it: if you strip the color from a given space, it loses a lot of its character. Whether it's country, modern, traditional or vintage, color is a strong driving force in any design theme. That's why the first step in decorating is always choosing the right colors. Unfortunately, that's where many homeowners fail.
But setting your home colors doesn't have to be complicated or expensive. After all, it's your home-most of it is a matter of personal choice. Start by choosing your main color-it can be your favorite color, something eye-catching, or something that sets the right mood. Use it as your dominant color, putting it on large surfaces such as walls, floors and the ceiling. Next, pair it with a secondary hue that looks well against your main color. You can either go for something that matches, like a darker or lighter shade, or create contrast by choosing one that clashes. This color will go on the accents and room fabrics, such as curtains, rugs, pillow covers and upholstery. Try to distribute it evenly around the room so that both the main and secondary colors are visible from every angle. It's important to place colors where they will get the most attention, especially if the rest of the room is plain or neutral. One of the best ways to do this is by using area rugs. Rugs come in every color of the rainbow, so just choose one that suits your current room design. Properly positioned, an area rug can tie your whole design together and create that professional, clean-cut look. One thing you should remember when setting your color scheme is that it's easy to go overboard. While it's important to be consistent, you don't have to color every corner either. Before buying a new piece, ask yourself how it will contribute to the rest of the room. If you already have too much of one color, a different color or shade might be more appropriate, even if it's not in line with your décor.
Choosing your home colors doesn't have to be a complicated affair. This guide offers a few simple tips on setting a color scheme and making it work for your home. Read another article on area rug colors.
