Shoppers Guide to Buying FurnitureSubmitted by John Lewis Sun, 24 Jan 2010
Measure, measure, measure
The idea of measuring cannot be stressed enough. From beds to sofas, it's important to make sure that everything will make it to the intended room without having to shove it through doorways or tear it up while struggling to get the pieces up the stairs. You want to start with your home. For instance, if you are shopping for a sofa bed, you don't want it to be too wide or deep, so it's important to know how much is too much. You can usually find out by visualising where you would like to place your sofas and measure out the space to see how well they will fit. You're not done, though, because you should consider your doorways and access points. Measure the height and the width of doorways to ensure that you don't purchase any furniture that you can't fit into your space. In the case of beds and mattresses, you should also consider the measurements, but usually most standard sized mattresses can be turned to their side and angled to get them to their desired home. If you're considering a single mattress, you'll likely have no problems, so there might not be much measuring needed. Also, since most beds come in pieces, you probably won't have to measure much more than the space where you intend to put the bed. Make sure you will be able to fit the bed and any bedroom furniture you might purchase before you shop for it because there is nothing worse than getting it home and discovering that everything is cramped. Now it's time to measure the furniture When you go shopping, keep in mind that no matter what type of furniture you are shopping for, you'll need to have the measurements of your home on hand and be ready to measure the furniture you're interested in. So, if you are considering a massive sofa bed, make sure to measure the depth, width and height, but don't stop there. Since sofas are often turned on the diagonal for delivery, make sure you measure the diagonal, as well. It's a good idea to choose furniture that's about an inch or so smaller than the dimensions you have for your home, to ensure that everything fits well. If you're shopping for bedroom furniture, don't forget to pick up a duvet cover. Duvet covers will help to pull a bedroom together and give it the look you really want and they come in all price ranges, so consider a new duvet to go with all your new furniture to make your space, well, yours.
