Shoppers Guide to Buying Tumble Dryers

Submitted by John Lewis

Types of Tumble Dryers:

Tumble dryers can either be vented or condensed, with the former being less expensive and a better energy saver. However, the vented drying process requires that the damp air is released outside the home through a hose. This would therefore require that the tumble dryer is placed either near an opened window or a vent is placed through the wall so that the damp air can be released.

While being more expensive, the condensed dryer offers more flexibility, and it involves the process of separating the water from the moist air. This can be done either by using the current plumbing system in place for your washing machine, if suitable, or the moisture can be drained into a container, that you will need to empty after drying.

Features of the Tumble Dryers:

The features and benefits of having a tumble dryer are many. These include faster drying times and less creasing of the clothes because of the large drum. In addition, many of the machines have either two or three settings for cottons, synthetics and delicates. A timer or sensor controls the drying cycle, and what's great about it, is that during the last 10 minutes of drying, the heat is turned off, leaving the fabric to tumble in a cool setting, and returning to room temperature. This also reduces static as well as fibre shock, which often creates creasing. Another great feature that you will enjoy is that some machines have a setting for cool air, and this is very useful for airing clothing which previously have been stored away.

The reverse tumble or action is another helpful feature for many full-sized tumble dryers. This separates the fabric and helps it to dry quickly and evenly. In addition, some have a crease care feature that allows you to leave the fabric in the dryer for some time after drying, without you having to rush to empty the dryer as soon as it stops. In order for you to have optimal drying performances, the tumble dryer has a filter, which collects extra or stray fibres, and the filter requires regular cleaning.

Investing in a tumble dryer will be worth your while as most fabric can be tumble-dried. In addition, using energy efficient techniques such as loading the right amount of fabric, cleaning the lint trap and drying similar types of fabric together, will help to reduce the cost of running your tumble dryer.

For more information, you should check with your local suppliers for costs, types, features, styles and availability of tumble dryers, and if required, recycling facilities are also provided in some local areas.
