Nike dunks is footwear from the world famous Nike brand. Nike shoes/ sneakers are well known for their sports oriented designs. The Nike dunks were first introduced into the market way back in 1985. It was touted as the fraternal twin of the Nike Terminators. The Nike dunks when first circulated in the market had numerous colours in several sizes as Hi-Top and Low-Top varieties for different Universities and Colleges. With some change Nike dunks was introduced back in 1998. It has since then travelled from being a basketball shoe into much more - a fashion and style statement, a sub-cultural Icon.

Nike dunks footwear has a low profile outer sole compared to the parent shoes. This design is to come out with light weight shoes that give the power to stay close to the ground. The panelling in this model was also specially designed to help basket ball players when they made moves like pivoting and blocking. The Nike dunks were also intended to represent a unique program called College Colours program. Nike signed up with some famous college basket ball teams along with their coaches for a Nike dunks sponsorship deal - each coloured pair of Nike dunks should match up with their uniforms.

When in 1998 Nike dunks were re-introduced, there were not just the University colours but new colours that were non-team oriented. Around this time, Nike dunks came with the same model in reverse colours; they had Nylon tongues and arch supports. Since then, the Nike dunks have steadily been growing in popularity and fashion. Production numbers have been increased to meet with the growing demand.

The Nike dunks though intended originally to be basket ball shoes became increasingly popular in the skate boarding area too. Because of the absolute stability the Nike dunks offer owing to the low profile sole, they served to improve grounding performance of skate boarders. So, Nike soon came up with Nike dunks specifically targeted at skateboarders called Nike SB Dunks. This model has extra padded puffy tongues that give a cushiony effect along with Nike's own Zoom Air insole. Nike SB Dunks have become a popular model among Nike dunks collectors the world over. Nike also comes out with special edition and collectible Nike dunks by collaborating with designers. Because of their universal popularity and appeal, Nike dunks has triggered the release and introduction of many new models along the same lines.

Nike dunks have been given to stores at competitive prices with recommended sale prices. But due to their increasing popularity and proportional rise in demand, Nike dunks are typically sold at higher prices by shoe stores. The internet has only served to increase the Nike dunks reach. Some of the limited edition models are so popular that they sell at really high prices which are ten to twenty times more than the recommended prices. In recent times, Nike dunks have found their way in to the hip-hop scene as well which is again contributing to its growth and patronization.
