The Art of Floristry And Its Business

What are the most important elements of being a florist? There are several things that one should know about before becoming a florist and opening a flower shop. One important element of being a florist is to learn about what floristry really is. So what is floristry? Is a term used to denote the art of arranging flowers to make them more inviting or is the business part, in which a person should be knowledgeable enough to handle a flower shop business? According to different philippine florists, floristry is term that describes both the art of floral design and the business of selling flowers.

The Art of Floristry
Floristry is term used to describe the the professional floral trade. The term clearly encompasses the cultivation of flowers as well as their arrangement, and to the business of selling them. In the business part, this may involve merchandising, and display and flower delivery. Florist shops, along with online stores are the main flower-only outlets, but supermarkets, garden supply stores and filling stations also sell flowers. In floral designs, however, may involve more complicated tasks.

Floral Design or floral arts is the art of creating flower arrangements in vases, bowls, baskets or other containers, or making bouquets, wreaths, corsages, boutonnières/'buttonholes', artificial arrangements and other more complicated arrangements. According to different philippine florists, creating these floral designs may involve skills in selecting flowers that will look good together (based on principles of design or general instinct), knowing how to cut, treat, and arrange flowers and other stock plants so they will remain fresh as long as possible, and (as explained above) selling them, which involves knowledge of customer requirements and expectations.

The Floral Business
According to different philippine florists, the success of floral businesses is heavily influenced by different seasons as well as holidays. These include the popular Valentines Day, Christmas, Mother's Day, All Souls Day, All Saints Day, Advent, Administrative Professionals Day (which is a unique event in the US), and Mother Mary's Day (in which Filipinos would usually offer flowers to Mother Mary). Other events in which floral businesses bloom are in weddings and funerals. These occasions make up the largest part of the business, with the sale of house plants and home decor being a smaller, but more constant, part.
