The Art of Gift Giving

Today, gift giving has become more than just a nice gesture, but an art to give someone a gift that they will love and cherish. Anything can be a gift, depending upon the recipient. Some gifts are things that people really need but cannot afford, other times the gifts are things that the receiver may want, but it is too frivolous of a purchase to buy themselves.


Giving gifts in not a chore and should never be looked at that way, instead, we should look at giving gifts as either something fun to do or something nice to do. When beginning our shopping for each recipient, we should try to think about that particular person and whatever we know about them. First we should decide if we are buying them something that they need or something they want. We should think about the person and their hobbies, their likes and dislikes, their occupation or major, the activities they enjoy as well as the ones they need to do.


Sometimes we buy gifts for others that we would never want to receive ourselves. For instance, someone who goes out to eat nightly would not want to receive cookware or bake ware, but someone who dabbles in gourmet cooking or finds that baking relaxes them may look at new supplies as a wonderful gift. We have to take ourselves out of the equation.


Most people buy gifts for children at some point in their lives. One think you should remember with shopping for a child is that it is not only important to keep the child's wishes in mind, but also the parents. Whereas a child may love a set of drums, they parents may be less than appreciative of that gift. For children it is also a good idea to keep in mind their age, their personal development and if they have the room for a certain type of toy or activity as many toys and games do take up a lot of space.


Women are also a group that is bought for a lot. One item that women receive as gifts far more than purchase it themselves is jewelry, especially high end jewelry. When shopping for a woman, whether it is your wife or significant other, or a family member such as mother or grandmother, it must be remembered that it is a gift which should have some function, therefore the jewelry must fit in with their style and lifestyle. However, the higher end the gift is the less the recipient will probably wear it. High end jewelry may be used for a night out on the town or some other social engagement. If she is a mother and has parental responsibilities, you may want to pair the gift with a gift certificate for babysitting or some other activity to alleviate her responsibilities so she can use the jewelry, instead of it collecting dust in a jewelry box somewhere.


Finally, one thing that I find can work well as a gift for just about anyone is a gift basket. Gift baskets come in all shapes and sizes as well as price ranges. The variety of the wares represented in gift baskets in astounding as well. These days you can buy gift baskets with gourmet food, specialty items, books, or for special occasions such as housewarming gifts, birthday baskets and get well baskets. My favorite type of gift basket is for babies. You can give a baby gift basket for a baby shower, once the baby is born and sometimes even for the first birthday. These presents are usually presented in a beautiful manner and have both fun and functional gifts inside, which most mothers to be and new mothers just love.


Gift giving can be looked at as a chore, but once you learn how to properly shop for those on your gift giving lists and are able to give presents which really impress them or bring them joy, you will never look at gift giving the same again.
