The Jollibee Family

Submitted by Christine Layug

Jollibee is known as the biggest fast-food restaurant in the Philippines. Its signature brand, however, isn't only the contributing factor for its success in the food-service industry of the Philippines. Jollibee Foods Corporation have also been known to own other fast-food restaurants outside of its own signature segment. One is pizza-pasta segment which is Greenwich Pizza, an oriental-style restaurant which is Chowking, a bakeshop and a French-inspired bakery known as Red Ribbon Bakery and Délifrance, as well as a carinderia inspired restaurant Manong Pepe's.

Pizza-Pasta Segment
Jollibee's true passion is through widening their scope outside of their own signature segment of hamburgers and fries. The first expansion that JFC made was with buying 80% shares of Greenwich Pizza. But in 2006, Jollibee Foods Corp. bought out the remaining shares of its partners in Greenwich Pizza Corp., equivalent to a 20% stake, for P384 million in cash. The new company was called Greenwich Pizza Corporation, and the franchise experienced rapid expansion.

Oriental-Style Segment
Chowking was considered as the pioneer of Asian quick-service restaurant concept in the Philippines. The concept combines the best in Western fast-food style of service with Chinese food. In 1989, Chowking started expanding its market share amid the volatility in the domestic market. Through JFC's desire to penetrate all market, the company decided to acquire one of the best oriental-style restaurant in the Philippines, which is Chowking. On January 1, 2000, Chowking became a wholly owned subsidiary of Jollibee Foods Corporation. The change in ownership gave rise to store renovations and a new corporate look and mindset that is visible from front-end to back-end.

Bakeshops
Other than traditional dishes, such as with Greenwich and Chowking, JFC have also set their eyes on other growing markets, particularly in the pastry industry. Jollibee first acquired Red Ribbon Bakery, a rising bakeshop in the industry, as well as obtaining a franchise of Délifrance. Through Red Ribbon Bakery and Délifrance, JFC further expanded its penetration in the food service industry, particularly in the French cafe-bakery.

A Carinderia
Little is still known with Manong Pepe's other than introducing this new line of fast-food chains in July 25, 2007 in Edsa Central in Mandaluyong. This restaurant was mainly inspired by popular fast-food restaurants in the Philippines, which are known as Carinderias. Manong Pepe's was built to professionalize the Philippine carinderia business. It was firstly known as "Tio Pepe's Karinderia". But in later years, the name was changed to Manong Pepe's.
