Tips to wrap a beautiful gift

There is a world of difference between receiving a gift which has been given some tender loving care in its presentation, and receiving one which comes straight out of a plastic bag. Gift wrapping is simpler than it looks, and even if you are not the most patient of people, there are a few ways in which you can improve the overall appearance of a gift in its packaged form.

Wrapping flat packages with solid edges (such as a book), is easier than random objects, and lends itself well to creativity. Tissue paper can be used to give your gift some added padding, and is ideal if you are wrapping something like food parcels and will be putting them in cellophane.

Always wrap your package on a flat surface to try and avoid lumps and bumps. Put the side you wish to be seen first, face down under the paper on the bench, and fold so that the side with the seam will be the last to be noticed. Cut the wrapping paper to size so that there is only enough paper to cover all sides of the package, otherwise you will be wrapping layers and creating a rather unsightly masterpiece!

Use clear tape which is not going to unravel, and fold all your corners neatly and try and stick inconspicuously, rather than being a bit sticky tape happy.

Ribbons are varied in their textures and colours, and add a classic touch to a gift. Use scissors to curl your ribbon, or tie a bow for materials such as rope or raffia.
Contrast your wrapping with the ribbon. For example, gold wrapping paper can be contrasted with blue ribbon, and for added effect, buy a couple of different sized ribbons and tie them around the gift tog ether, to create layers and volume.

For packages which have odd height or shaped bases, such as hampers or large toys, create dimension by wrapping them with a dome effect. Bunch the wrapping paper at the top, tie with a ribbon, and cover the wrapping paper with cellophane before draping various ribbons down the package.

For a child's gift, stickers can be used on the wrapping paper featuring their favourite cartoon character. For wedding gifts, try wrapping a gift with personalized paper bearing the initials of the couple.

Wrapping gifts in your own creation is a fun and enjoyable way to present a package. Buy a box and cover it in a photo or picture montage for a birthday or anniversary. Gift bags can be filled with gourmet delicacies as well as the present for added creativity.
Items such as pot plants are a slight challenge to wrap as they can be heavy and dirty. Wrap a plastic bag around the base of the plant before giving it a lining with tissue paper and then the wrapping paper.

Fragile gifts are best wrapped with bubble wrap, which is usually a dead giveaway to what the present may be, however it is better than having a destroyed present.
