Washing Machines - Things You Need to Know Before You BuySubmitted by John Lewis Tue, 8 Dec 2009
Types of Machines:
There a many different types of washing machines that can be bought today. Each type of product offers their own advantages and disadvantages. Freestanding washing machines are by far the most popular types to buy, whereas integrated washing machines are great if you want them to be hidden from your guests. Being front loaded integrated washing machines are covered by a door panel which you can have coloured to match the rest of your kitchens décor. The only visible parts are the machine controls. Front loading items are the most common, popular and versatile types of washing machines you can buy. Mainly because they can fit anywhere: in a corner, under a counter or behind a cabinet door. Integrated washing machines are always front loaders. Top loading washing machines on the other hand are great if you're short of space. However, they do use up more energy and water than front loaders, mainly because they have larger wash capacities. Wash Programmes: Depending on the specific make of the machine, each washing machine will vary according to the number of programmes it has for you to use. For example, newer machines will have specific settings to wash fabrics such as fine wools or silk, whereas older models will not. Despite this, the majority of products on offer will come with the following programmes installed as standard: > Cottons (need the most rigorous washing action) > Synthetics or easy care (need gentler action) > Delicates (similar to synthetics programme, but gentler) > Woollens (need lots of water and very little agitation) Furthermore, some machines also allow you to adjust the temperature and the cycle length in order to reduce the amount of energy used. Spin Speeds: The majority of machines these days come with a minimum of two speeds. These are as follows; > 1000 - 1800 rpm > 400 - 800 rpm The speed of the spin is determined by the specific programme selected. For example, higher speeds are used to wash cottons, whereas lower speeds are good for synthetics and delicates. Energy Usage: All machines are graded according to how energy efficient they are. These grades are given as a result of standardised test being carried out by the manufacture. All testes are monitored by Trading Standards. Usually more expensive models have a higher graded as they have a number of energy saving features included as standard. Nevertheless, many reasonably priced units do come with a high grade. Delivery: Depending on the retail store you get your machine from delivery options will vary. Some retailers will be able to arrange for collection and recycling of your old appliance (at a cost of £9) so that they can be disposed safely. Alternatively you can save the £9 and take it to your local recycling centre to be recycled free of charge. Installation: Note, before installation the transit straps must be removed. Every machine will come with a full installation instructions manual; however, it is strongly advised that you get a professional to install your appliance. If not then you can easily wake up to find your kitchen flooded.
