A very old tourist resort

Here are some facts about this amazing island:

Along with trade, the island Hvar has built its economy on fishing although there have always been vines, figs and olives on the island. But fishing was much more profitable, and thanks to the hard-working fishermen, the municipality of Hvar was one of the wealthiest in Venetian Dalmatia. Venetian Dalmatia because Hvar was two times under Venecian rule. The island's wealth was poured into many monuments, churches, palaces, houses and fortresses.

Furthermore Hvar Town was a significant seafaring, trading and military harbour during the centuries of Venetian rule. This can be seen by the building which is known as the Arsenal. It was one of the most important buildings on the Island, and it was used to house, repair and store ships.
There are numerous other buildings on Hvar with very fascinating stories, but we would need too much space to mention all of them.

The island Hvar has been developing as a well known tourist resort almost a century and a half ago, due to its wonderful climate, natural beauty and cultural heritage. It was 1868 when the Hygiene Society was formed in the town Hvar and the first hotel was opened on the Pjaca, the largest square in Dalmatia.

But the tourism started even earlier, farther back to the time of legends. According to a myth, the first tourists who set foot on the Island Hvar have been the Argonauts, who came two thousand years before Christ to the island and called it Pityeia what means "thickly wooded with pines". In Antique times, rich Romans traveled to the island for holidays. From the fifteenth century onwards, the most frequent visitors have been European pilgrims, because Hvar was a stopping point on the very well-travelled sea-route from Venice to the Holy Land. After the fall of the Venetian Republic in 1797 the route was closed. In the late 18th and throughout the 19th century Hvar was visited by countless scientists and naturalists. The founding of the Hygiene Society on 15 May 1868 in teh town Hvar on the island Hvar generally marked the establishment of "science tourism" to the island. The Society was very important, not only to the tourism of Hvar, it marked the beginnings of modern tourism in general, maybe because there were no other similar societies in Europe at this time. Today, the Town Hvar is the main tourist centre of the island and one of the most attractive tourist destinations on the Adriatic coast, not only because of the sun and the sea. Hvar offers its guests beautiful Hvar apartments , a wide range of cultural events - performances, exhibitions, concerts and of course the popular Hvar Summer Festival, with its musical and folk events.

The nightlife in Hvar Town is also well known and very vibrant in the summer months. Hvar is a good place for those who simply want to soak up the sun, the sea and the nightlife and for those who want to have an active holiday. It is a very popular scuba-diving location. You can also try all kinds of aquatics like sea kayaking, sailing, water skiing or hiking, trekking, rock climbing and tennis. Mountain biking is also very poplar way to get around the island and see its many sights. There are numerous, varied bike trails with fantastic views.
