With San Francisco apartment prices being what they are taking on a roommate is something many renters find themselves considering. Here are some things you would do well to find out from potential roommates when going through your screening process.

You should talk with potential roommates about what their daily routine or schedule looks like. Your objective is to find out just how different your schedules are. Some difference is good as both you and your roommate will need time alone from time. However keep in mind if a situation will exist in which your schedules are completely opposites it may not work too well. For instance they're up and getting around the apartment every night until 2:00 or 3:00 in the morning and you're one who goes to bed at 10:00 or 11:00.

You'll want to discuss pets. Are they allowed? Does yours or theirs need special consideration? Consider issues around things like shedding, food, cleanup, and any and everything else you can think of. Now is the time to establish the ground rules. This is an area you should not overlook or compromise. If you are not a pet person and they are, or vice versa to compromise in this area is a recipe for a failed partnership.

Next you'll definitely want to know what kind of work they do. You're mostly interested in whether or not they work steadily. This of course goes directly to their ability to pay their portion of the rent. Also if they're somewhat coy about the type of work they do this could be a red flag indicating they may be doing something that’s not exactly legal.

You must also discuss smoking with your potential roommate. You should already be clear in your own mind whether or not smoking in the apartment is something that is acceptable to you. By the way, smoking or allowing it in the apartment is not a practice I'd recommend because of the residual effects of smoking.

To close out you should spend some time talking about apartment dwelling cleanliness. Talk about how clean is clean enough? Everybody has their own levels of acceptable cleanliness. You'll want to make sure your apartment roommate is atleast somewhat compatible with yours.
