Change or Die
(A Book Review)
By Bidz dela Cruz
We live in a world where the only constant is change. Surprisingly, people hate change. In a scenario where one is front with a life and death situation, Alan Deutschman poses a question: “What if a well-informed, trusted authority figure said you had to make difficult and enduring changes in the way you think, feel, and act? If you didn't, your time would end soon—a lot sooner than it had to. Could you change when change mattered most?”
Change or Die is a book that opens strongly in its first 5 pages with a factual gathering of experts and most brilliant thinkers around the world last November 2004 at Rockefeller University. Entrants and delegates of the conference were asked to come up with solutions to the world's biggest problems. Their first task was health care crisis. The topic progresses and everybody concluded that primarily, people should change their unhealthy lifestyle and go back to doing more exercises, eating more healthy foods, and avoid drinking and smoking habits. Here, in this statement, change is of the essence.
Deutschman goes on to conclude in his book that although we all have the ability to change our behavior, we rarely ever do. In fact, he said that the odds are nine to one that, when faced with the dire need to change, we won't. Then he goes on to enumerate cases where change is a necessity: from patients suffering from heart disease to repeat offenders in the criminal justice system to companies trapped in the mold of unsuccessful business practices. “Many of us, he said, could prevent ominous outcomes by simply changing our mindset.”
A highly influential book that could change the world now, Change or Die debunks and deconstructs age-old myths about change and arms us with three primary pointers—relate, repeat, and reframe—to help us make significant positive changes in our lives. Magnifying breakthrough research and progressive ideas from a good pick of leaders in medicine, science, and business (including Bill Gates, Dr. Dean Ornish, Mimi Silbert of the Delancey Street Foundation, Daniel Boulud, and many others), Deutschman shows how anyone can accomplish and actualize a deep-rooted, revolutionary change.
Change or Die is not about merely restructuring or reorganizing priorities; it's about inspiring, challenging, and helping the citizens of this world make the dramatic changes necessary in any facet of life—changes that are positive, achievable, and absolutely critical.
