7 Tips to let someone down gently when you know they are wrong for youSubmitted by Susan Lancaster Sat, 5 Feb 2011
Sometimes in life there are moments when we need to let go of someone. We may not want to but deep inside we feel that this person is not adding anything to our lives. Letting someone go is difficult for some but it is a task that sometimes needs to be done.
One tip that will help when doing this is to first make sure that this is what you want to do. Give this good thought before you make a decision; for once the decision is made, it will most likely be final. Another tip is to think of something kind to say. For instance, you might say something like, "I've enjoyed our relationship and I feel you have to but it seems like our relationship is just not going anywhere. It might be best if we go our separate ways, at least for awhile." You want to let them down gently because most are sensitive when it comes to breaking up. Another tip is to do this over the phone or in person. Keep your words simple, clear and honest. You don't want to draw out this process too long because ending any relationship hurts. Still another tip is once you have ended the relationship, stay away from him or her. It is so easy to go back to such a relationship and when you do, the pain and frustration starts up again-and often, quickly. So, once it's ended, keep it that way. An additional tip is to always be honest during this communication. And, keep in mind that most people handle being "let go" fairly well but there are some that don't. We are all different and sometimes when we come together as a couple we find out that our interests and goals are different or we find that the personality traits of the other just don't mix well with ours. So, always be honest and gentle when letting someone go. A final tip when you're letting someone go is to learn from the experience. If this person's personality conflicted with yours, stay away from those who act like him or her. In addition, if this person was demeaning in a psychological way, stay away from those who have the same behaviour.
