The end of a relationship or marriage is an emotionally trying time on both partners. Whether it has been a few months or years it is difficult to get over. If the relationship is not salvageable it can be hard to deal with your emotions.

To cope with the emotion involved in a break up there are strategies you can use to help you move on with your life. Firstly do not blame yourself for what happened. Even if you have caused upset to the other party, you have to learn to deal with your guilt and move on. You cannot change what has happened and it is not healthy to keep torturing yourself with your mistakes. Try to avoid remembering and reminiscing on old times- this will not serve any purpose in the healing process.

Utilise friends and family members during this time. They can help you by listening and supporting you in your decisions- even just talking to someone can help you to start the moving on process. Try and avoid shutting yourself off from the world. You need to start regaining your confidence and boosting your self esteem. It is hard, but try and indulge in hobbies and interests. Any form of distraction is good to help you emotionally move on with your life. It is best to avoid the alcohol and pills trap. It is common for people to look for solace in these methods after the end of a relationship but it is only a short-term fix.

Finally if you think it will help, you can seek professional counselling to help you move your emotions on and start your life afresh.
