Being considered inconsistent is people's biggest fear. Humans are creatures of habit, so they remain consistent. That is why alcoholics are never cured. They see themselves as problem drinkers, and they are. It becomes a self fulfilling prophesy.

Your ex broke up with you because they either saw themselves as inconsistent staying with you, or they see you as being inconsistent. One of these two will emerge if you dig deep enough. The only thing you must do is prove to them it will be inconsistent to be without you. You are not being manipulative, simply helping them make the right decision for both of you. Don't worry, they will never know.
