Grief is an emotion that we will all experience at one point or another in our lives. Usually grief will be the result of a loss that we have experienced. This could be the loss of a loved one through death. The loss of a relationship through a breakup or divorce. It could be the loss of a job. The loss could be from a variety of lifes facets and involve many different levels, whether deep or superficial. The loss from a broken relationship will commonly result in grief.

The loss of a relationship is a very common occurrence that will lead us to grieve. A relationship with someone special gives us companionship. It allows us to share our experiences with someone that we care about. This becomes something that we look forward to and need in our lives. It is part of what fulfills us. It is no surprise that when a relationship ends it results in grief. We have lost something special to us.

Why do some people in short-term, broken relationship experience grief? They don't have as much invested in it as those in a long-term relationship. One reason their grief may seem to be as overwhelming is the break-up results in the loss of their hopes and dreams. This person may have dreamt that they found the right person to settle down with, to share their life with, to raise a family with. When the relationship ends, in a sense so does their hopes and dreams. The result is grief.

A broken relationship can also result in grief due to the loss of the support that you received from your partner. This support could have been on many levels such as emotional, finanical and/or intellectual. We may not realize the extent in which we relied on that support until it is gone.

There may be deeper, perhaps more serious reasons why a broken relationship leads to grief. This may include fear of abandonment, fear of or history of rejection in your life, a feeling of being ashamed of yourself, or a history of abuse.

The grief experienced from a broken relationship can occur for many reasons. The degree to which it affects us depends on a variety of reasons also.
