Online dating services – how to make them work for you

We all know that online dating services welcome anyone who wants to join them. Surveys show that in 2005, more than 60 million unique visitors registered with online dating sites in the US. That is almost more than half the total number of eligible adults in the US. Surveys like these show that online dating is claiming a new importance in the social life of millions of singles.

However, of all the people joining these services, less than 25% find the true and stable relationship they are looking for. This naturally leaves us with the question as to why the overall success rate of online dating services is so abysmally low. If this is a great way of meeting and getting to know people who are interested in relationships, there why are people failing

Spoilt for choice:
In the last couple of years, we have evolved to become a society that is obsessed with the freedom of choice. We have more than 200 channels on TV; upwards of 10 established brands when it comes to shopping anything from lingerie to designer furniture, and a whole lot of other choices that make it difficult for us to make up our minds. We have very well earned for ourselves the dubious reputation of being the pickiest generation of all times. In such a situation, it is easy to become too choosy while picking the right mate. When you make a selection based on a profile, it is important to remember that what you see on the computer screen is only one side of a person. Everyone has a listing of attributes and qualities that develop as the relationship progresses. If you are a perfectionist looking for the perfect qualities in the perfect mate, then you can gain little from online dating services.

Poor profile:
Remember that for a person browsing through various online dating services, you are just a profile. Imagine being passed up by an attractive mate just because you could not take the trouble to weed out careless errors, poor grammar and bad language from your profile. Such a profile shows your lack of interest in the whole project. If you could not find the time to read what you wrote before posting it on a site, then you run the risk of coming out of the experience looking quite bad, though in reality you may be an attractive person or the soul of a party. Before you post your profile on the Web through online dating services, make every effort to ensure that your description is candid, clear and correct. This maximizes your chance of pulling in the right sort of person.

Internet etiquette:
Though online dating services are for singles who are ready for a relationship, it is important to remember that you are not here for trash. Individuals looking for instant gratification and short-term fun cannot really hope to find long-term commitments through online dating services.

Online dating services can help you find the person of your dreams provided you are serious about the whole exercise. By following simple rules, you will be able to meet men and women from different cultures, backgrounds and societies. And you'll be able to take your pick from the lot.
