There are many ways to cope with depression after a breakup and many of them in combination with each other can be effective in overcoming the depressive state. My opinion is that the number one thing that you can do to overcome depression after a break up is to vent your feelings.

Many people have a tendency of keeping their thoughts, opinions, views and feelings bottled up inside. This is not healthy and can cause a person to experience both physical and mental changes. By expressing your feelings, either verbally or in writing or both you will release those negative emotions which will allow you to view your situation more objectively while releasing inner stress.

If you'll allow yourself to share your thoughts and feelings with your friends and family, those people that you look to for support will better understand how you are feeling and what your perspective is. Once they know that then they may be able to offer you solutions to your problem and help you cope with depression after a break up. If you never express how you feel then your support group won't be able to help you effectively.

Verbalizing your thoughts and emotions or even writing them down will allow you to hear and read how you are feeling in a different way than if you just keep your thoughts in your head. When you hear or read your own words you may look at your situation with a different perspective. This can give you a fresh outlook and help you formulate new ideas or a new plan that will assist in coping with depression after a break up.

It is important that you reach out to your support circle following a break up. Express you feelings to them and remain open to their responses and advice. Write down how you feel in a journal. List the pros and cons of your relationship and the interactions that you had with your ex. You may be surprised at what you learn about your relationship.
