What To Look For On A First DateSubmitted by articles@christiandatingforfree.com Tue, 14 Jul 2009
First dates can be stressful. You are worried about how you look, what you are saying or not saying, if the person likes you, or whether you have something stuck in your teeth. It can be even harder as a Christian as you are trying to assess whether or not this person is walking the same path as you. Here are some tips on what to look for on a first date to know that you are headed in the right direction.
Location You can tell a lot about a person by the place they choose to go on a first date. Does your date choose a warm friendly local coffee shop or a national chain shop? Do they avoid food altogether and choose an activity date such as hiking or rock climbing? Do they choose a date location that promotes conversation or do you go to a movie and sit in silence for two hours? If you are curious as to why your date chose a particular location, just ask! Punctuality Was your date on time? There is always the exception, but people who are late are generally selfish and do not respect other people is time. This is not a good quality in someone who you could one day marry! The first date is not the time to make a judgment call on punctuality, but keep a tally of how many times your date is late. It says a lot about their character. Appearance Now, this is not about their physical appearance. We all know that what matters most is what is on the inside. However, if the light of their soul is overshadowed by the sweat stains on the armpits of their shirt, that is a different story. Your date should have made an effort to look nice and presentable for you. If they look sloppy, thrown together, or emit a foul body odor, chances are they are not the type of person you will want to be with for the rest of your life. Conversation While every first date has those times of awkward silence, there should be a fairly steady flow of conversation. Get to know the things that your date values most do they enjoy talking about God, their family, their pets, their job? Do not be afraid to ask them to talk about the place their faith holds in their life. You want someone who is as serious about their Christian faith as you are, otherwise you are wasting each others time and money by dating. Respect Does your date show respect to both you and the other people you encounter on your date? One way that you can gauge someones Christian faith is by how they treat the little people of the world. Are they courteous to the waitress at the restaurant? Do they hold doors open for the people behind them? These little things speak volumes about a persons character. It is Just a First Date Remember that first dates are just that first dates. You are not going to learn everything about the person on the first meeting. You are getting to know someone who could be a friend, a best friend, or perhaps eventually your spouse. Do not put pressure on yourself or the other person to be The One right away. If you feel that the first date went well, let the other person know you would be delighted to see them again. Take things slowly and you can build up a good Christian relationship.
