Finding Volunteer Opportunities in the UK

Submitted by Stevevolman

Voluntary work can be defined as any that aims to benefit someone other than the person doing it. Volunteers are responsible for a huge amount of work in many categories that help to achieve success in diverse projects and bring aid to millions each year, by extending and covering holes in local and national services. The satisfaction derived from volunteering for a worthy cause is only one of its rewards, new friends and colleagues met while working can become an important part of relocating to a new area and getting to know the community there. Volunteering has changed with wide use of the internet, so locations of staff can be as diverse as their backgrounds and training.

Opportunities at the Citizen's Advice Bureau
The Citizen's Advice Bureau are a first stop for anyone with a question or problem about almost any subject, their highly professional and well trained staff, who help millions of people each year, are mainly volunteers. More details are available at local offices.

Volunteer Opportunities at the 2012 London Olympic Games
Volunteering to be part of this unique project will be a special memory to carry and pass on to future generations. Over 70,000 volunteers will be needed to perform public services in areas such as interpreting, stewarding, transport, media services, administration, security, ticketing, medical support, first aid and escorts and aides for players. To register for training for this event, sign up for alerts at the London 2012 website and look for courses starting in 2010.

Volunteer Opportunities with the Women's Royal voluntary Service
The WRVS provides a wide range of volunteers for activities ranging from support for local emergency services to care for isolated individuals and the elderly. Always happy to welcome new helpers, a successful volunteer candidate will become a part of a vital support network operating 24 hours a day, all year around. Local phone books provide contact information for volunteers.

Volunteer Opportunities that Save the Planet
Blue Ventures Conservation (BVTC) involves 130,000 volunteers per year in work ranging from field trips to UK support of marine conservation projects. BVTC is actively involved in the Millennium Volunteers scheme and offers placements and training for the unemployed. Their web site is http://www.btcv.org/.

How to Apply for a Volunteer Opportunity.
Online contacts are frequently the first place to look, especially if no local office can be found. Local community notice boards are often a rich source of information about voluntary workers being sought in the area. Presenting yourself in person at a local centre, complete with CV and photos is an effective way to gauge how good a fit you would be in any agency.

Other Volunteer Services
The scope of volunteer work is so broad; there will be a niche for anyone to fill where their expert knowledge on any topic imaginable will contribute to furthering the aims of a chosen service. Some of the lesser known charities and organizations using volunteers may be found by online searching and enquiries to your local government who maintain lists of all the organizations in the area that use volunteers.
