Learn To Be A SurvivalistSubmitted by infojunky
Contrary to popular belief. Learning to be a survivalist doesn't generally include how to field strip an M-60, how to arm land mines or to kill a man with your bare hands. Surivalism is a philosophy that things may not always be as good as they are now, and history has proven that great civilizations always rise and fall and never last forever. With the increasing uncertainty in the world today, the demise of the American Civilization has become a more and more realistic possibility. With that in mind the survivalist prepares him/herself by learning the lost skills of self sufficiency.
As a civilization we have, over time, become so specialized in our respective disciplines that we have lost the ability to support ourselves individually through interdependence on other specialists. Such as the farmer who buys his equipment and fuel from others, or the attorney who depends almost completely on others to provide the specialized skills that he/she has not the time nor inclination to acquire. I doubt that most doctors spend much time learning to rebuild the carburators on their vehicles. Below I've identified several disciplines that would be useful in a self reliance situation. 1. Learn to process and preserve your own food. Canning, dehydrating, pickling etc. 2. Raise animals such as rabbits, chickens and goats. A solid protein source is necessary for maintaining your energy levels when things are scarce. 3. Learn to garden. Grow useful items such as potatoes, onions, herbs, cabbages, etc. Not flowers. 4. Start preparing meals the same way you would if TSHTF. No microwaves or electric stoves. Make your meals without the instant meal kits that you get from the supermarket. 5. Learn to repair and alter your own clothing. Leatherworking. 6. Learn to locate desirable spots for water wells and how to drill them. 7. Learn to work on your vehicles and appliances. 8. Learn radio communications. 9. Learn to forage in the wilderness for food. 10. First aid skills 11. Learn metalworking skills. Blacksmithing, welding, and casting. 12. Learn wilderness survival skills such as fire starting, navigation, water location and purifying and emergency shelter construction. 13. Practice your hunting, fishing, trapping and backpacking skills, including cleaning fish and field dressing game. 14. Practice marksmanship and firearm safety. Join the NRA and a local shooting club 15. Learn basic household repairs. Electricity, carpentry, plumbing, woodworking. 16. Make soaps and candles You should always be expanding your library and your knowledge of these areas. The important thing to remember is that you don't want to have to start practicing these things when your life or the lives of your family members depend on it. Some, if not all of these skills takes practice to become proficient enough to be useful in a survival situation. Make it your hobby, you'll never regret it. This list is by no means comprehensive so, but should get a person started as to a core group of skills that will help you survive in a long term disaster situation. About the Author
