Majorca Residents Feel European Invasion

Submitted by Osborne

Majorca is a warm, sunny, picturesque island off of Spain where residents are fighting to hold their ground and hand on to what is left of their land. The first charter plane landed in the small island of Majorca in 1952. Since World War II, Majorca has become a favorite holiday destination for the British and the Germans alike. It's not hard to see why Majorca is so appealing, with its beauty, charm, and affordability.

The British and in higher numbers the Germans, however, took this a few steps further, resembling a silent takeover. This is a hot topic for Majorcan residents.

German Ownership in Majorca
Germans not only like to take their holidays in Majorca, they also buy properties there. One-fifth of all properties on the island of Majorca are German-owned, and 80% of all of the homes on the island are owned by Germans as well.

There are a high percentage of German restaurants in Majorca, and the German tabloid sells 65,000 copies a day on the island, proving their strong network within the island.

Majorca Residents Fear German Takeover
The Germans and Brits continually drive out the French, Belgians, Spanish, and even the Majorcans from the island. Majorcan residents are fed up with Germans taking over their land. They are outnumbered on their own island, and while they have been thriving off of tourism for years, it is the same tourism that is now forcing them out of their homes.

Because of the German takeover, property prices have risen to the point where the average Majorcan can't afford a home on the island. In fact, the island is home to some of the most well-known German people and is becoming a holiday spot for the rich and famous who often take a villa holiday Mallorca before moving to the island full time.

Residents of Majorca aren't happy about the Germans silent takeover. They want to reclaim their island and live peacefully with tourism on the outskirts of the island, basking in the sun and soaking up the cool waves.

The German Invasion Continues
Though they are not at war, it appears as if Germans are taking over Majorca. There is little Majorcan residents can do about it either since they are dependent on the revenue from tourists. The German invasion continues as the number of people making their way from Germany to Majorca this year is up 13%.

Most Germans have visited Majorca one or more times in their lives. Repeat visitors purchase properties to stay in during their holidays on the island or to rent out to other tourists. But as the number of visiting Germans continues to grow, the number of Majorcans on the island continues to decline.

Majorcan residents are fed up with Germans and their attitude that Majorca is their home. The more Germans come to Majorca, the further inland they push. While Majorcans used to be able to maintain their land and their culture within the island and leave the outskirts to visitors on holiday, that is no longer the case. There is nowhere left for Majorcan residents to retreat, especially when they can't afford property on their own homeland.
