Wedding Rings

Submitted by Celeste

It’s generally all about the engagement ring first, and then it is about the wedding band. Which is strange, as it is the wedding band that is going to last you a lifetime, and stay on your finger. Generally soon to be wed couples go for a simple band, something understated, and that won’t go out of fashion or attract too much attention.

In fact, when it comes to wedding bands, it’s not all about the design like the engagement ring, but more about the type of metal that you are going to use. There are various metals to choose from.

Platinum (Pt) is a rare metal that is often chosen for wedding bands as it has a gorgeous white lustre. The metal does not tarnish over time; therefore it is an ideal material to make wedding rings out of for everyday wear. It is highly resistant to wear and tear, plus it's hypoallergenic, so you don’t have to worry about skin sensitivity.

It is a relatively expensive metal because it is quite rare, and is quite a dense material, so it will be heavier then a gold ring. You will pay more for it than gold. Gold (Au) is the most common metal used to make wedding bands. The metal does not tarnish and there are a variety of different types of golds to choose from.
You have a choice of Rose Gold, White Gold, Green Gold, as well as Yellow Gold. Gold is often combined with other metals and is measured on a system of Karats. The amount of Karats the gold has will determine its value. 24 Karats is pure gold, and has a soft texture.

White Gold is another popular choice and is a combination of Gold and silver-type metals. White Gold is also measured on the karat system, with 17 Karats being the highest quality. Another option is Titanium, which is becoming more and more popular.

Titanium is lightweight, hypoallergenic, and is three times stronger then steel. It is also stronger then Gold, Platinum and Silver. It is highly scratch resistant, but remember that titanium cannot be resized. This is important because if you lose/gain weight over the years, you might need a new one made, as you cannot cut it off if it gets stuck.

There are a variety of metals to choose from. You have to take into consideration your budget, style, design and personal choice when it comes to the different metals as each has its own look and fee. Remember, that this is your wedding ring and chances are, you’ll be wearing it for life.
