Pepper spray is also known as OC spray (from "Oleoresin Capsicum") or OC gas. It is organic based in nature and a derivative of cayenne pepper that causes extreme irritation to the eyes, making them tear and cause immense pain. The action of the spray is effective because it causes the mucous membranes in the eyes to swell, This inflammatory agent causes temporary blindness and difficulty in breathing, which can last up to 90 minutes. Pepper spray is NOT water soluble, but milk has been shown to lessen the effects of the spray after exposure. This agent is usually rated according to two scales: the percentage of pepper spray contained in the delivery system and the number of Scoville heat units (SHU).

Would you follow a natural instinct for your defense or freeze on the spot? If properly contaminated with pepper spray, an attacker will not be able to open their eyes for 10 minutes up to an hour which is plenty of time for you to put a safe distance between yourself and an attacker. A one second burst to the face will cause temporary blindness, choking, coughing, and nausea-bringing the attacker to his knees. Keep your non-shooting hand stretched out in front of you to keep distance from the attacker. Aim and spray towards the attacker's face while moving backwards away from them. Continue spraying or be ready to spray until the attacker has stopped advancing. You can drop an attacker from several feet away without ever really hurting them, giving you more time to defend yourself or get away.

The ONLY justification for using pepper spray must be in self-defense from personal injury. As such, it's role is vital as it provides protection against even the most dangerous attackers. Owning civilian grade pepper spray is endorsed by authorities and is legal in all 50 states, (some jurisdictions have restrictions) as a means of defense against stray dogs, or as a means of defense against human assailants as opposed to the use of a firearm. It is prefect for citizens interested in non-lethal defense products for a broad variety of situations. Proper training is strongly recommended, both to increase the effectiveness of defensive sprays and to minimize the potential for injury or accident exposure.

Pepper spray is easy to use, and can be carried in a purse, a pocket, or attached to a keychain. It is a product that needs to be carried everyday while going out. Buying and carrying it is sure to give you peace of mind. One of the keys to effective use of pepper spray is timing and recognizing a potential threat and knowing when it becomes an assault. While you can debate the effects of the spray, I assert the real benefit is that the bad guys THINK that pepper spray is nasty and effective.

Pepper spray is now used by nearly every law enforcement agency throughout the country because it is more effective than mace or tear gas and because pepper spray does not directly cause permanent harm. It is used only when a subject is actively resisting an officer, combative, or has the potential to cause death or grievous bodily harm. It is very handy for law enforcement to have in violent assault situations, as a violent assault occurs every few seconds in the United States alone.
Because pepper spray is an inflammatory substance, it affects even those who might not register pain, like psychotics, drug addicts or inebriated individuals.
