Why, Who and What are angels?
Millions of people worldwide believe in the existence of devils or evil spirits. Many have went beyond their belief or curiosity and are practicing black magic or calling on the devil or evil spirits, in their quest for power, money or fame. To me it sounds funny when they deny the existence of angels just because angels cannot be seen - because both of them are invisible spirits. Although spirits, they can and do manifest their presence in our world in concrete, perceptible ways.

The existence of good and evil can be clearly seen in our everyday lives, in whatever part of the world you live in, whoever you are, in our local communities, in the way different governments conduct their affairs in whatever country. Of course, we dont have to look far.

Nowadays, we know of relatives and friends who have taken the road of unhampered, super aggressive seeking for money and gold, fame, honor and glitter in their quest for happiness. But, we also know that this road only gives us temporary satisfaction and very short lived happiness. The accumulated wealth can only buy possessions which can give us enjoyment only while these things are new and then very rapidly diminishes as the thing gets used and deteriorates through time. Money cannot buy a guarantee of a serene, peaceful and truly happy life. It cannot shield us from failures, disappointments, rejections, or unfaithful friends. It also cannot buy us love, I mean the real kind of love which comes from the heart. Genuine love which does not reek of any self-interest or manipulation. And not the kind of fake love which is really just admiration. Yes, relationships can be bought, because people very naturally gravitate towards the man who has money, position, power and properties because these so called friends can get something out of the relationship.

If this is the case, then how can we avoid falling into the trap?

It should be clear to us that the trap to a miserable life is not laid down solely by evil spirits. We can also fall because of our own weaknesses and defects. Or, well-meaning friends may give us the wrong advice. The widespread availability of countless goodies and gadgets like newer and newer cellphones, ipods, furniture, fashion, jewelry, etc.. plus the well planned and effective marketing and advertising we see on TV, newspapers and glossy magazines, here in the internet, etc.. Then, we get tempted to spend beyond our means, or as the old saying goes, Trying To Grasp Something Beyond Our Reach. We may also encounter apparently normal, next door neighbor types who are actually trying to befriend us or strike a good business deal with the bad intention of springing a con game on us.

So many things to watch out for, and so few good people who do give good advice or reminders to guide us properly. So, how are we able to cope? Considering that inspite all of these things around us, there are still lots of people we know who are decent, God-fearing, family-oriented, faithful friends, hard workers, who give silent but effective service to their communities. Why? It's a credit to their good character of course, but we should not dismiss or be blind to the fact that there are good spirits, angels who constantly guard all of us and who steer us away from real deep, serious problems.

WE start by using the bible as the fundamental reference, because it is an authoritative set of historical documents. In doing so, we are therefore not relying on speculations of men, or on just some authors' experiences nor plain logical analysis nor merely a rationally drawn out conclusion.

Some people have claimed, maybe due to a not so thorough research, that there are just a few vaguely mentioned passages in the bible referring to these spiritual beings.

On the contrary, the mention of angels is inclusive in Scripture. In the NASB translation they are referred to 196 times: 103 times in the Old Testament and 93 times in the New Testament.

There are numerous references to angels by the Lord Jesus, who is declared to be the Creator of all things, which includes these spiritual beings. Paul wrote, "For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities (a reference to angels)— all things have been created by Him and for Him."
Some specific passages mentioning angels

Some found in the Old Testament:

1. They were assigned to guard the entrance to the garden of Eden - Genesis 3:24
2. Protected Lot - Gen 19
3. Helped Elijah - 1 Kings 19:5
4. Helped Isaiah 6:6
Some found in the New Testament:

1. Matthew 28:2 (the stone rolled away by the angel weighed about 4 tons).
2. Mark 13:32 the angels which are in heaven
3. Luke 2:13-14 At seeing the birth of Christ, the angels rejoiced in praise to God
4. Heb. 2:7-9 By creation man is lower than the angels
5. 2 Thessalonians 1:7 refers to the return of the Lord with His mighty angels in flaming fire.
6. 2 Peter 2:11 reads, "whereas angels who are greater in might and power do not bring a reviling judgment against them before the Lord."
Plus many other passages all throughout the bible.

And then some...

In his 1990 book Angels: An Endangered Species, Malcolm Godwin estimates that over the last 30 years one in every ten pop songs mentions an angel. But that was just romantic fun.

In the past several years Time, Newsweek, Ladies' Home Journal, Redbook, and a host of other popular magazines have carried articles about angels. In mid-1994, ABC aired a two-hour, prime time special titled "Angels: the Mysterious Messengers." In Newsweek's November 28, 1994 issue an article titled "In Search of the Sacred" observed that "20% of Americans have had a revelation from God in the last year, and 13% have seen or sensed the presence of an angel" (p. 54).

At Amazon.com, a search for Books on Angels produces 56,990 Results. Many of these are devotional/ inspirational. Some books are novel/fiction type.
