Praying - the first form of cheap outsourcing

Submitted by leanne king

The world is full of people nowadays sending messages to God via prayer. A lot of the messages or prayers must be the same. Asking for God to give me, give me, give me stuff. It might all start off innocently along the lines of "please help" but it ends the same way in a lot of cases. The result is if you don't give me what I am asking for, or show me a sign then I won't believe that you exist. If an instant result does not occur then the praying turns to bargaining. The prayers will now consist of an offer to God to compromise; if God does this thing for you then you will go to church, be more devoted, give to charity or whatever is appropriate for that prayer.
Imagine if God was a shop keeper and every day had to get up to go to work and hear the same old messages from his customers day in day out! Imagine if your customers said to you every day if you do not make this thing happen for me, and sometimes it may be a miracle you are asking for, I will never come to this shop again, you will no longer exist for me.
Praying used to consist of thanking God for the many wonderful things in our life that we now take for granted. We may have asked God to bless those that are important to us or need our help but it was not in the form of a demand rather a request. It seems that this form of praying is now reserved for Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. Our usual form of prayer now consists of a demand for outsourcing our lives.
When we are asking God to get us a new job, a better job, a lover, a better lover all we are asking is that someone else does our work for us. We are delegating responsibility for our lives with no indication that God accepts or is willing to take this role. Outsourcing our desires and demands is an easy solution to our problems. It requires no skill, hard work or commitment on our part. It is just a quick fix that needs 5 minutes of our time. As the saying goes, "you get what you pay for". If you do not pay for your love of God in the form of faith and devotion you cannot expect to get a result.
Praying is the conduit to the first form of cheap outsourcing that people resort to when they start using God as a means to fixing their lives rather than using faith and prayer to enrich their lives. The problem with outsourcing via prayer is, of course, unless you have faith your prayers will go unanswered. Instead of putting a band aid on your life and aiming for a temporary fix, aim higher, have faith in God.
