The Mayans Gained Their Wisdom By Studying The World

Submitted by mayanca137831

The mayans calendar 2012 is a fascinating topic not only because it can be discussed on so many levels but on a sheer intellectual level alone, what this ancient civilization was able to create based on both the world of nature around them and the stars above in the heavens is truly fascinating.
Essentially the mayans calendar 2012 is divided into the short calendar and the long calendar, There are of course many variants of the minor calendars, however the long calendar is universal and is the mostfascinating due to the astrological nature of it that allowed the Mayan seers to make predictions far into the future because of the way their calendar was created.
Mayan culture dictated that time progressed in a circular fashion, meaning that time moved through stages that would at some later date repeat themselves, this is the importance behind the circle shape of their calendar itself and why both the short and long versions overlap and are dependent on each other, and it is this circular fashion of time philosophy that makes the mayans calendar 2012 so important.
The Mayans gained their wisdom by studying the world around them and as a result were far more in tune with the universe than the average person of today, their entire culture was structured around their religious beliefs but the interesting thing is however that those same religious beliefs were a offshoot of their research of the natural world and the cosmos at large.
The short calendar was basically put into use when it came to things such as annual religious proceedings and of course agricultural purpose and was used as a practical method to keep things on track within their development, this overlapped with the long calendar because at several points in this short calendars cycle they would marked re occurring things, say for example a flood, if this flood occurred several times, they would then add it to their calendar and it is by this system of noticeable and record keeping that the short and long calendars evolved one and the same.
Of course as with everything there is much more to understand about the calendars themselves, and I can only contribute a brief generalized overview of the topic, however what I do think is interesting about the topic is that the long calendar was used for divination results by the higher echelon of the ancient mayan society and it is via this method that things similar to the mayans calendar 2012 theory has come into being.
The mayans foresee that at the end of their calendar would be the end of all times, and they based this on their religious beliefs which they were seemingly told by their "gods" early in their pre history, in mayan religion it is consider that the world had been made many times, and that the age they themselves were living in was not the first and they did indeed comprehend that the previous ages or "worlds" had been devastated by the "gods" because they were unhappy with their creation, so if their very existence had begins with the devastation of the last age, then it must have only alleged logical to them that at the end of their calendar would mark the devastation of this one, as the gods had consistently promised to return from the sky's.
