Erectile dysfunction (ED), also known as impotence, is the inability to achieve or sustain an erection until ejaculation. Erectile dysfunction is different from other conditions that intervene with intimate life, such as desire and orgasmic disorders.
Male impotence varies in severity: some males have a total inability to achieve an erection, others have an irregular ability to attain an erection, and still others can sustain only brief erections. The variations in severity of ED make it difficult to estimate its frequency. A lot of men are also reluctant to speak about this sexual dysfunction with their physicians, and therefore the sexual problem is under-diagnosed. Nevertheless, 30 million males in the USA are estimated to have ED.
While erectile dysfunction can affect in all ages, it is uncommon in young men and is frequently observed in the elderly. By the age of 45, most men have experienced ED at least some of the time. However, if it becomes chronic, it can have adversely affect relationships, emotional health, and self-esteem.

Within the past decades, the medical perspective on the causes of impotence has changed. People once believed that impotence was usually caused by psychological factors. Today specialists believe that up to 85% of impotence cases are brought on by medical or physical factors. They include blood vessel disorders, high blood pressure, diabetes, nerve damage and other health conditions. Some of the medicines used to treat these medical conditions can also trigger erectile dysfunction. Only 15% of impotence cases are grounded on psychological factors. They include anxiety, depression, strain, and problems in relationships. At times ED is due to a mixture of physical and psychological problems. Life-style can adversely affect male sexual well-being and virility, too. Heavy smokers, alcohol addicts are at high risk of developing the sexual disorder.
Advances in science have helped increase the number of ways to cure male sexual dysfunction effectively. Drug therapy of PDE5 inhibitors is the major treatment for the disease. Sildenafil (Viagra), vardenafil (Levitra) and tadalafil (Cialis) are the three medications approved for treatment of male impotence by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The blue little pills were initially invented to treat blood vessel problems and forestall heart attacks. It was concluded that the pills could widen blood vessels. Angina was believed to decrease if more red blood cells carrying oxygen were delivered to heart muscle cells through the dilated cardiac arteries. Not only were cardiac vessels relaxed, but so were blood vessels in other places. This side effect was taken into consideration when medicines for the male sexual disorder were being invented.
Apart from the drug therapy, there are other forms of treatment. The cause of sexual dysfunction and a male's life-style influence the treatment a family doctor chooses.
