The Payoff for Youth Getting Involved in CommunitySubmitted by Stevevolman Thu, 22 Apr 2010
For youth looking to break away from the mundane and do something fun with their time, opportunities abound that extend way beyond Facebook, HDTVs and Wii controllers. While these activities have their place, they can become boring. Over time, they can drain your energy and make you feel tired, lonely, and craving interactions with others. Many youth are looking for something more engaging, more social, or more physically or mentally active to do with their free time.
Depending on the inclinations of the individual, enrolment in a sporting activity may suit a bored tween or teen nicely. Engaging in sports is as good for you as it is fun. You learn to stay active and care for your body, helping you live a long, healthy life with plenty of energy to get through each day. You learn how to be a team player, which helps you succeed in your career in later life. Sports also offer a healthy level of competition, which instils an ambitious drive and higher level of confidence in players. Some individuals may be more suited to the arts, and would benefit from enrolment in music lessons, or perhaps participation in school or local theatre groups. The performing arts build confidence, helping participants gain comfort in public speaking. This skill will benefit almost anyone, regardless of future career prospects. Playing an instrument can help strengthen your fine motor skills and concentration ability. And the performing arts also offer a fun way to interact with peers, where you can make and keep lifelong friendships. If you're looking for friendships and fun activities, you may need look no further than your local youth centre or place of worship. These facilities often have organized youth projects, which hold parties, go on outings together, and engage in volunteering activities within your community. Volunteering to help others or to support your community offers a sense of accomplishment and the appreciation of others. When you hand a bowl of soup to a homeless member of your community, and he looks at you with gratitude in his eyes, nothing can make you feel more useful and appreciated. Volunteering can extend beyond community service, and it can have implications to your future career. If you think you want to be a doctor, volunteer at a local clinic or hospital. Not only will you help people in need, but you can see what being a doctor is really like, and it adds a bullet point to your work history, which you can use as a reference later in your adult career. Whatever your current or future interests are, you can find a volunteer opportunity to suit them. Think you want to be a world-famous author? Volunteer at a library or possibly even for a publisher. Interested in politics? Look up the website for your favourite politician and look for how to volunteer for his or her campaign. Wherever your inclinations lie, you can find fun activities with which to fill your free time. Sports, performing arts, youth groups, and volunteering are four engaging, social, active opportunities. Try one on for size and see if you find it more fulfilling than hours in front of your Wii.
