This is why I think they ought to legalise brothels and prostitution.Submitted by Tomas Cot Sat, 4 Jul 2009
In the U.S.A, the latest studies have shown the laws for prostitution forces the people concerned out of the brothels and into the residential neighborhoods. The result is that residential neighborhoods are rife with street prostitution and residents bear the brunt of these policies. It goes without saying that the main dilemma with it is the street prostitutes are exposing their selves to a lot of danger. Working girls are set upon by sick people such as sex attackers or worse still, murderers or serial killers. Maybe we ought to take a look at the ways of some European cities such as Berlin for instance. Here they operate specialized vice areas to contain the activities and reduce crime on the streets. Also, maybe most importantly, the prostitutes their selves are much secure than on the street.
Street prostitution is notorious for its problems with drug abuse and it is used to finance the habits of women. Women become hooked because being arrested for prostitution will make it impossible to gain proper employment. Or often they get hooked at an early age as a result of their difficult childhood or the lifestyle of their neighborhood. Some crooks flourish as a result of the illegality of prostitution such as sex attackers or muggers because the reluctance of prostitutes to report crimes. Working girls often won't report being attacked or mugged for fear of being prosecuted themselves. With the legalization of prostitution women would be less reluctant to report crimes as they are their selves be acting within the law. In this situation, there would be far fewer crooks given the chance to commit these crimes and far more being prosecuted. This would get rid of the crime hot spots where these crooks operate by moving prostitution off the streets. Take a look at Brussels as an example. Crime in such areas is minute compared to the U.S. Sociologists in Nevada, where prostitution is legal, they have rigorously researched the prostitution industry and have found that crime is lower in various parts of Nevada. So if this is the case, then there is no grounds to continue criminalizing brothels and prostitution. Certainly not when its poor people attempting to finance their selves, and, or their loved ones. For many, prostitution can seem like the only way to earn the money they need to survive. Some prostitutes don't need money and some actually enjoy their work. Some earn more money then many of the people the know and live extremely comfortably. So why should anyone oppress them. The customers have as much right to legal prostitution. For the majority of people that use prostitutes, they're law abiding people and extremely friendly. Many of them struggle to get a relationship or they have experienced bad luck in a past relationship. As we approach the end of the article I guess my message is pretty simple. Legalized prostitution will help to minimize street crime and it will certainly improve the lives of prostitutes. If only they would legalese it and set out some workable guidelines.
