The first and the foremost thing that should be kept in mind while making the choice of the wedding ring is that the metal for the ring. In this context the most common choice is of course the choice of gold. It is a well known fact that the gold wedding ring is the most common and the most favored choice in respect of the choice of the metal for the wedding ring. It is also the part of the tradition of the wedding rings and its importance in a wedding ceremony.

In this context if we look back into the history of the wedding rings we may find that the history goes back to the ancient Egypt. This custom gradually spread to the Romans where with the progress of time the wedding rings became the symbol of possession of men over women. Once a girl accepted the ring from a man she became his possession and she was no longer allowed to get engaged with other men. But with the change of time this tradition changed too and spread farther. And passing through several ages it reached the modern day society where it has been seen that the custom of wedding rings is followed in almost every country and every custom. And the most interesting fact is that the custom of wedding rings is equally popular even in the modern day society.

Now to have a look at the choice of metal for the ring in the history of the wedding rings it is seen that in earlier ages iron was the most favored choice as the metal for the ring. The iron was the symbol of power and strength and men preferred this as a presentation of their strength and control over women. But with the progress of time this custom changed too and gold replaced iron as the preferred metal for the ring by providing more durability and beauty to the ring. Gradually the wedding rings became the part of the fashion statement and the custom of having it in a more decorated manner started. Here started the attachment of gems with the ring. In this context it has been noticed that throughout the ages diamond has been the most preferred ring for the ring. But the fact of being too precious it was not an affordable item for the common people and only the kings and the nobles were the ones who used them.

But in the present day context the scenario has changed a lot and the fact is that the idea of the ring also changed from a symbol of possession and strength to a symbol of love and the union of two souls. Thus it can be seen that though the tradition of the wedding rings has changed a lot throughout the ages. Besides that in the present day context it has been seen that these days several other precious metals are replacing gold very often as the metal for the ring. Such metals like platinum, titanium, white gold are much popular these days as the choice of the metal for the wedding ring.

A wedding band is a symbol of love and commitment of a couple towards each other; the wedding ring keeps the relation of a couple intact, no matter how far they are from each other. The ritual of using wedding bands is prevalent in almost all cultures of mankind.
