A male attendant in a wedding ceremony is a groomsman or usher. Usually the groom chooses his dearest friends and/or relatives to serve in his wedding as a groomsman. It is truly considered an honor to be selected as such. Of these groomsmen, one is named the best man. This is usually a lifelong friend or brother.

These wonderful friends and relatives are responsible for helping the groom with wedding related tasks and at the wedding they assist in making sure everyone has a fantastic time. Basic groomsmen duties include planning a bachelor party, dancing with guests that do not have a dance partner at the reception, helping move gifts, and help guests find seats at the church or ceremony location.

The groomsmen work tirelessly for the groom to ensure that his wedding and everything that goes with it is the best experience and the best day of the groom's life. In order to show the proper appreciation to these loyal male friends and relatives, it is a tradition for the groom to give these men gifts of thanks. These are commonly known as groomsmen gifts or groomsmen favors.

Most grooms spend anywhere from $15 to $100 on each groomsman or usher. Tradition gifts include items such as flasks, money clips, cufflinks or pocket watches. Some grooms try very hard to think of practical gifts that will be used a lot. Possibilities for practical groomsmen gifts include Gerber or Buck knives, Leatherman multitools, swiss army knives, wallets, mugs, Zippo lighters, or pens. Those items tend to see a little more use than something like cufflinks.

Whatever the groom decides on as gifts, it is commonplace to have these gift items personalized, customized, engraved or embroidered. A gift that has someone's name or initials instantly has more meaning and sentimental value to the gift recipient than one that doesn't. For instance, a money clip can cost anywhere from $10 to $100. If your wedding budget doesn't allow much wiggle room, you might only be able to spend $20 for each groomsmen. If that is the case, you can take a $15 money clip, get it engraved, and present it to your friend. It will have infinitely more meaning than if it was not personalized. Everyone loves to see his own name. Everyone loves to feel like you fussed over them. It is more important to spend effort than money.
