5 Traits of a Successful Youth Soccer Coach

Submitted by Trevor Sumner
Mon, 1 Feb 2010

Another youth soccer season is fast approaching. Parents are getting their children registered, referees are brushing up on the rules, and youth soccer coaches are getting prepared for the first practice. It can be tough coaching youth soccer. It takes a special person to deal with the various personalities of both the children and their parents. A youth soccer coach has to be able to motivate the shy kid, the exuberant kid, the aggressive kid, and all other manner of personalities while molding them into a cohesive unit. The following are 5 traits of a successful youth soccer coach.

You can also find other soccer coaching resources online at websites like Weplay.com.

1. Use Your Creativity - Discipline in practice is one of the surest roads to youth soccer success. Ball handling and play development will have your charges developing the skills required to win soccer games. But remember, these are children and they need to have fun, positive reinforcement while they are learning. Use your creativity to add variety to your practices. Additionally, short, innovate soccer drills will help hold their concentration while they practice.

2. Focus on the Soccer Drill Fundamentals - At the beginning of the soccer season it is important to evaluate each player's skill level and athletic ability. Pay close attention to their ball handling skills including passing, ball control, and shooting. Set up a few soccer drills that emphasize these skills and break the soccer team into groups. Start the players in the soccer drills they are most proficient in to build confidence and then introduce them to the more advanced soccer drills.

3. Be a Good Role Model - Let's face it, all eyes are on you as the leader of the soccer team. The players, parents, opposition, and referees all look to the youth soccer coach to guide the team in an appropriate manner. Consistency, emotional control, honesty, and integrity are important character traits for the youth soccer coach. Continually develop these within yourself.

4. Be Positive - A positive soccer coach will bring positive results. It may not always result in a win; however, it can always lead to positive change and improvement. Chastising a youth soccer player because of a mistake will not achieve the outcome you are aiming for. Using that mistake as a teaching tool from a positive standpoint can produce lasting change in the player.

5. Accept and Give Constructive Feedback - Effective communication is the backbone of all successful organizations and it is no different for a youth soccer team. An effective coach will listen to and direct assistant coaches, players, and parents in order to develop a top-notch team. Keep the lines of communication open.
