Betting with Money Lines

Submitted by David Salt

There are many different types of sports bets that can be made. The type of the bet can vary from sport to sport as specific bet types are more applicable to certain sports. One type of sports bet is the money line bet.

Money line bets are fairly simple and straightforward. In a nutshell, a money line bet would require a wager to be placed regarding which team will win a sporting event. This type of bet is a popular one for American football. There are no point spreads involved in money line betting which makes them appealing especially to those new to the world of sports betting. Prior to the event, one team is identified as the favourite to win. The other team is referred to as the underdog because they are projected to lose. The amount of your bet varies depending upon which team you choose to place your wager on. This is done in order to level out the betting. Otherwise, most people would place bets on the favourite.

When placing a wager on the favourite team, the bet placed would be higher than the bet placed on the underdog. Now, what's interesting is the amount of potential winnings. Bets placed on the underdog return a larger amount of winnings than do bets placed on the favourite. This again is done in an effort to leverage the money line bet. Some people that bet often on sports prefer the money line bet because if the projected underdog would in fact win, they would make a nice profit from their money line bet.

For example, say a money line was set on an upcoming game between the Washington Redskins and the Dallas Cowboys. The money line placed Washington as the favourite with a money line of -160. This means that in order to win $100, a wage of $160 for the Washington Redskins must be placed. Obviously, the Dallas Cowboys would be the underdogs. If their money line was set at +140, then a wager of $100 would be placed in order to win $140. Money lines effectively even out the betting table.
