Everything You Need to Know About Surfing

Submitted by ArticleHulk

If you're interested in learning how to surf, it's a great idea to start checking out surfing blogs to catch up on surfing's latest news and lingo. The fact is that surfing is it's own sport with its own attitudes and language.

Surfers will tell you that surfing is a way of life. Some people will tell you it's an industry, and some will tell you it's a sport. Some will tell you it's an art, or that surfing is simply who they are. The truth is that surfing is all of these things. The world's best surfers are constantly discussed in industry magazines like Surfer Magazine and Surfing Magazine, along with pictorials of their surfing style. These guys and girls make their living both by being sponsored by industry brands (Billabong, Quicksilver, Hurley, and many more) and by winning surfing competitions. Blogs can keep you up to date on all of this.

There are also a lot of words in the surfing world that you may not be familiar with. For example, surfers use what is commonly known as a "leash" to keep their boards close to them in the water, but many surfers around the world call this a "leg rope." Board shorts, the long swim suits worn by surfers to keep their knees out of their board's wax, are sometimes called baggies.

There are also lots of little questions you'll have as you learn to surf. Such as, where do I put my wax? In your board shorts. What if I drop my wax in the water? Wax floats. What's a rash guard? Shirts you wear in the water to keep from getting a rash on your chest and stomach, which can result from the wax on your surfboard. Can you tan through a rash guard? Yes. How bad does a white jelly fish sting hurt? Not much and it goes away in about 5 minutes. How long should my first board be? How can I practice surfing without getting into the water? How do I wax my board?
