If you’ve been watching the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championships) and are interested in starting MMA what do you need to know? Here are 7 tips to get you started.
1. Martial Arts The most effective and popular mixed martial arts are Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a very effective submission based martial art. Muay Thai is a form of Thai Boxing and very effective whilst traditional boxing is a good starting point. Becoming skilled in several martial arts will build up an extensive arsenal of punches, kicks, throws and submission. 2. Gym You might find a gym that specialises in MMA nearby, but be prepared to travel. Knowing what’s available in your area might help make the choices for you. It is unlikely that you will be willing to travel far for an hour’s lesson. Why not see if the gyms do a trial lesson, or will let you watch a session to see what you think? 3. Gear MMA fight gear ranges from training pads and headguards to T shirts, gloves and shorts. Dressing for MMA isn’t just about looking intimidating and fearsome; there is a lot of safety involved too. Dedicated clothing will offer more protection, and will have been designed and tested to stand up to the rigorous pummelling and pounding that MMA is all about. Whether you want a hoodie to wear when you’re not training or gloves for your first real fight, you need to know that the MMA fight gear you choose is suitable, proven and reliable. 4. Training Training is hard, and there will be lots of conditioning involved to ensure that your body is capable of withstanding the punishment. From running to bag work to develop kicks and punches and strength training, there is a lot to learn. Kicks and punches will soon become second nature, and hours of sparring will prepare you for your first contest. 5. Versatility MMA fighters have to be versatile, and not favour one martial art over another too much. You need to practice changing from one style to another, and know when your current tactic isn’t working. Effective MMA training will ensure that you can adapt to your situation and play on your opponent’s weaknesses. 6. Dedication Becoming an MMA fighter doesn’t happen over night. Being able to staying focused and dedicated to learning and wanting to improve will help the new MMA fighter to succeed. Joining with friends or colleagues can also help you to stay motivated. Don’t forget to take an interest in the world of UFC and MMA, as there will be plenty to learn from the professionals both on screen and in interviews. Also, there are many MMA websites that offer advice and training tips. 7. Enjoyment Perhaps you want to take up MMA to lose weight, get fit, or as a personal challenge. Whatever reasons you start MMA, you need to enjoy it, especially if you feel that you are not progressing, or have lost a fight and are not sure you want to carry on with it.
