Some Tips for Turkey HuntersSubmitted by usry1979 Fri, 18 May 2007
If you are a beginning or intermediate turkey hunter, you may have discovered that it's more difficult than it appears. The turkey in the wild, even with it's name, is a difficult bird for someone to stalk and hunt. The turkey has an unexpected intelligence and sharp eyesight and it's survival skills should not be underestimated. It can take a long time for a hunter to improve the qualifications it takes to get close to and creep up on a turkey. But you can greatly increase your chances in turkey hunting by having the upper hand with an effective camouflage. This lowers visibility for the turkeys and makes it possible the hunter to close enough distance to make a shot.
The ghillie suit, a type of camouflage that was first seen over a hundred and fifty years ago in the highlands of Scotland, remains the most effective type of camouflage available for the individual out in the field. A ghillie suit can significantly transform your appearance by drastically decreasing your visibility to animals out in the wild when you place it over your normal clothes. Ghillie suits work by having bits of textiles like jute and burlap that hang down all around the outfit. This breaks up the pattern and frame of the wearer and has them meld in to their natural surroundings. If a hunter is being perfectly quiet, the ghillie camo can be so efficient that it's possible for unsuspecting animals to come right up to them. A turkey's fine sense of sight is bewildered when human forms are broken up with the aid of a ghillie suit. To impede an injured turkey from scurrying off in the forests you must get within a range to get a quick kill shot to have success. By moving patiently and keeping low on the ground, a person can close the distance between themselves and a rafter of turkeys. It is ideal to try and find turkeys in the evening as they are preparing to roost. Sneaking up on a turkey is really difficult. In fact, if you spot a turkey in the field there's a big possibility the bird has already spotted you. It is hard to sneak up behind them because they not only can see a large distance but also have a broad range to their vision. A gang of turkeys will often face the other in circles to cover all sides of the field and prevent predators from sneaking up on them. Staying in a single location and waiting in a densely populated turkey area can be a somewhat slow process that takes a lot of time being very still. And there's always the chance that before you get a chance to put a good shot in the group of wary turkeys will locate you the moment you move and be on the run. It is possible to get within range of a gang of turkeys, but it takes perseverance and skill. With a good rifle, a ghillie suit, and an effective turkey call you should be able to outsmart those turkeys once and for all. About the Author
