Whitetail hunting is a challenge even for the most seasoned hunter.

The older the deer get the smarter they get. Yet, with this knowledge every year over 11 million hunters go out in search of the perfect kill to mount on the mantle and hopefully eat for dinner.

Deer are a beautiful and appealing creature who has, over the centuries, learned the habits of humans. They have watched and taught their young where hunters are most likely to be during specific times of the year and when it is safe to roam freely wherever they wish. They also have learned to watch for the signs of humans traipsing over the landscape they inhabit.

Hunters the world over find whitetail hunting to be the most fun. Even though whitetail are the most widespread of any kind of deer with at least thirty subspecies in North and Central America they are still the hardest to take down. It requires a mutated thought process to make the kill each season since as hunters learn where their prey are located the deer also learn where the predators are as well.

Like other kinds of deer this species also leave marks and trails that can be followed. When game trails are located it is customary to build a well camouflaged tree stand to await the moment of triumph. If done right the deer will not sense the danger and walk directly beneath you giving a great opportunity to take him down.

Deer scrapes in the ground from mating season are one of the signs that hunters watch for. These are a sign that deer at least frequent the spot but not always that they may return during the most dangerous time of the entire year. Still, there is hope and many a savvy hunter will build his stand nearby just in case. Fresh tracks are a sure sign that soon a whitetail will show himself. Whether it be on the way to visit his cousins or heading to the water hole, this is almost a guaranteed place to be when the time comes.

Whitetail hunting is not only a challenge but a way for the hunter to regain his respect of nature and the animal kingdom. Though it is true that for a couple months out of the year they are out in the woods to kill these beautiful and elegant animals they also have the chance to unite with nature for that basic instinctual need for regaining the sense of what the world of bygone days was really about.
