Federer - a record 15th Grand Slam title?

Submitted by traceyjoy

Roger Federer sealed his place in the Semi Finals of Wimbledon, with a straight sets win against Ivo Karlovic of Croatia, Karlovic went into the match against Federer having not lost his serve in this tournament, or at the ATP event in Queens which preceded it.

Federer and Karlovic had played 9 times previously with Federer winning on 8 occasions but a lot of the sets which the world number 2 were on tiebreaks.

Indeed when Federer lost to Karlovic in Cincinnati last year, he did actually lose his serve, but was toppled, 7-6 2-6 7-6 by the 6 foot 10 Croat, the tallest man on the ATP tour.

Karlovic would have been keen to make a solid start, in order to put pressure on Federer, but in just the third game of the opening set, Federer produced a touch of sheer genius, Karlovic served at 15-30 to Federer's back hand wing, a first serve at over 130 mph, and Federer effortlessly flicked it down the line for a clean winner, and just for good measure, the very next point Federer drilled a forehand down the line off another Karlovic first serve to seal the break in the first set.

That magical display from Federer may have been very early on in the match, but from that moment onwards, it was effectively a one horse race, as with those two clean strikes, one could visibly see the belief erased from Karlovic's face.

Breaking Karlovics serve is one of the hardest tasks in tennis, and yet Federer managed it with relative ease, on this form it is hard to see anyone preventing him from winning a record 15th
