Information On Pontoon BoatsSubmitted by dwep Fri, 24 Oct 2008
Pontoon boats can come in many different sizes and styles, but they are all designed behind the same principle. That principle being that the boat stays afloat by 2 to 3 logs, also known as "pontoons". Almost every type of pontoon boat today is made out5 of aluminum, which benefits the weight of the boat, since aluminum is a light metal, and also avoids rust from saltwater. Pontoon boats are flat and the pontoons under the deck of the boat minimize the amount that the boat will rock, so they are much more sturdy then most of the other types of boats that are out there. Pontoon boats can be anywhere from 6 to 28 feet long, and they can be either inflatable or they can be the motorized power boat type. Many people prefer to buy used pontoon boats over new pontoon boats, because they are similar to a house with the customization that you can do to them.
Inflatable pontoon boats are very popular among fly fishermen and river fishermen. They can generally seat 2-5 people depending on the size, they usually come with a small motor, and they reach speeds up to about 8 knots or more. One of the great advantages of having an inflatable pontoon boat is that you do not need a trailer or a marina dock, some of them can even fold up into the back of your trunk, and take only about 10 minutes to assemble and inflate. They can easily navigate through small rivers and creeks where normal boats wouldn't be able to go, which usually means there are a lot of uncaught fish swimming around there. Prices on inflatable pontoon boats can range from 500-2500 hundred dollars. The motorized pontoon boats are commonly referred to as party barges, family boats, house boats, because of their size, people can easily walk around and bring aboard anything they might need to party. Another good use would be for fishing, again with all of the room you and your buddies can easily round up some fish. The amount of upgrading that you can do to these boats is amazing, they make special furniture for pontoon boats and also make special tops, you could either have a bimini top or mount a roof to the boat, also known as a sun-roof. For a fisherman there would be plenty of room for tackle storage, live wells, coolers, fishing rods and reels, mounted fishing seats, and more. The only major drawback of pontoon boats is that they are not made for rough waters, the bow of the boat is only a few feet from the water, so the smallest waves can easily crash over the bow, so going out into the ocean is not recommended.
