Long riding boots are usually only made from PVC or leather. If you are a beginner it is advisable to wait before purchasing long leather riding boots, these can be expensive and can take some getting used to, especially if you are not sure if horse riding is for you yet. Long leather riding boots should be a snug fit and are commonly worn in eventing show jumping or dressage competitions. They provide the rider with good grip and can be worn with jodhpurs or breeches. They can be hot to wear in warm conditions. In these situations Jodhpur boots with gaiters of chaps can be a good alternative.

Jodhpur boots are ankle length with elastic sides for greater freedom of movement. They are more versatile but provide no leg protection and gaiters or chaps are often worn with them. They are a popular choice for children to wear as they are often more reasonable in price which is important when choosing riding boots for rapidly growing feet.

The correct riding boots are essential for any rider and safety can be greatly improved by having the right ones. There should be a heel on any footwear you wear when riding, this stops the riders foot from sliding completely through the stirrup. The tread on the sole of the footwear should not be too deep as this can get caught on the stirrup. Steel toe capped footwear can also assist in preventing unwanted accidents and squashed toes. Steel toe caps are more commonly seen in yard boots or muckers that many people have as a second pair of footwear. By having a second pair, there is no risk of damaging or dirtying riding boots and their longevity will be greater.
